Our Name
The Hi•dubał Baʔas /hee-du-ba-thl ba-us/ translates to “birth house,” with baʔas also meaning “society.” Our name reflects more than a place — it embodies a collective of families and community members united in the practice, reverence, and reawakening of Makah birthing and parenting traditions. We harness the strength of our community to support families through birth, parenthood, and beyond.
About Us
The Hi•dubał Baʔas works to reclaim and honor the wisdom and knowledge of Makah ancestors, elders, and birth workers by supporting and promoting community-led research, education, Makah language, and preservation of traditional Makah birthing practices for future generations.
We are a group of Makah aunties, based in Neah Bay, WA, who grew tired of seeing families in our community go without the care they deserve. Living in a small rural town means many have to drive over an hour and a half just for prenatal appointments. We formed The Hi•dubał Baʔas to provide support at the community level — ensuring our families can access culturally grounded care closer to home.
